perhaps a new GPU driver needs blacklisted

Caspy7: Bug 1417442 is for that.
  • firebot
    bugzil.la/1417442 — FIXED, jyavenard⊙mozilla.com — Colour distortion (purple/green) during video playback
  • Caspy7
    bwu: thanks
  • bwu
Caspy7: Thank you for helping us monitor the issues on reddit.
  • Caspy7
    np
  • Caspy7
bwu: I scanned that a bit...can you tell me if disabling HWA will solve it?
  • Caspy7
also, what are the chances on 57 & 58?
  • Caspy7
    I'm guessing high for 58
  • bwu
IIUC, the issues are on VP9 HWA.
  • bwu
    and windows 8
  • bwu
    s/VP9 HWA/AMD VP9 HWA
  • Caspy7
hmm, the card that the user reported to me is old, the last driver update is from 2014
  • bwu
We enabled AMD VP9 HWA on 57.
  • Caspy7
didn't expect VP9 HWA from a card like that
  • Caspy7
    ah
  • bwu
Caspy7: I got to go for lunch. see you!
  • Caspy7
    later
  • aap
hello how can I debug h26x mp4 playback
  • aap
  • aap
  • aap
ffplay also plays it just fine
  • aap
as does the built in ff57 player as file:///home/user/big_buck_bunny.mp4
  • aap
yet still in a html5 webpage it doesnt
  • aap
    riddle me this
  • X-tonic_
Hi, Does firefox support chromecast by a plugin or about:config or any other method?
  • X-tonic_
some googling led me to look for browser:casting config in about:config. But I had no luck spotting it.
  • jya
bwu: the issues have nothing to do with the vp9 decoder. But the use of nv12 surfaces VS rgba32
  • bwu
    jya: ta for this correction!
  • jya
Handling of nv12 surface was buggy in older amd devices
  • bwu
so we started to use nv12 from 57, and nv12 surfaces do not work well on some certain AMD cards. Is my understanding correct?
  • jya
Normally, we blacklist those drivers, but a bug in GfxInfo in the GPU process made the version empty, so the blacklist was never active
  • jya
It's a combination of hardware and driver. Like my mac pro with amd 7800 and 2015 drivers handle it just fine
  • jya
bwu: you're confusing the different kind of blacklists, what they are for and when to use then.
  • jya
We have never removed the d3d11 decoder blacklist from 57, nor even nightly
  • jya
On some cards, d3d11 decoder doesn't work. Thats it. And we can't always tell it's not working. Either it crashes windows, the drivers, but not Firefox.
  • jya
The blacklist that got removed in 57 is the blacklist of drivers that used to make *firefox* crashing. That the operations related to the GPU process allows to let the GPU process crash, and simply restart things.
  • jya
It has nothing to do with D3D11 back D3D9
  • jya
So your resistance to blacklist the Intel drivers so that we use the d3d9 is misplaced.
  • bwu
jya: ah. understood. Thanks for this good explanation!
  • jya
Now if somehow we could detect a d3d11 decoder failure, and automatically fall-back to the d3d9 one, that would have been great.
  • bwu
I am still curious user didn't encounter this crash before 57. It seems something changed in 57 causes this crash or at least makes it happen more easily?
  • jya
We should have done that years ago though... I don't think kentuckyfriedtakahe is that keen on spending any resources on those.
  • jya
Maybe he wasn't using Firefox before.
  • jya
I think with 57, we should assume that the people reporting the problem were using 56 before
  • jya
    We shouldn't assume that is
  • bwu
no. We shouldn't. But we can ask them. :-)
  • bwu
Anyway, I need to hit my bed.
  • jya
As far as Intel devices go, the code path in 57 is the same as 56.
  • jya
What has the bed done to you? Why so much violence?
  • bwu
ha. nothing violent. Just drop myself on it. :-)
  • jya
Caspy7: didn't you create a bug from a reddit comment where disabling the Gpu process led to much better decoding performance?
  • Caspy7
jya: sorry, woke not long ago. I don't remember if *I* created it, but yes, I remember the bug
  • Caspy7
    I'll have to look
  • Caspy7
  • firebot
bugzil.la/1408705 — NEW, nobody⊙mozilla.org — GPU process may be hurting video performance
  • Caspy7
jya: yup, guess that was me ^
  • jya
    Thanks for that.
