The migration to Matrix seems to work well. Nevertheless I'll hang out on (completely unofficial) #moz-maildev on chat.freenode.net for a while.
-
KaiE
I guess we'll still need to use some place for testing internal IRC capabilities of Thunderbird. Walt already mentioned he wants to use it.

jcranmer
I need to set it up later today

KaiE: which client are you using?
-
WaltS48
I could connect to FreeNode and just create a channel for release candidate testing. No real need to keep #moz-maildev alive.
-
IanN_Away
WaltS48: there's always #thunderbird on Freenode if you need to test an existing channel
-
WaltS48
IanN_Away: I think I joined that channel yesterday in my travels around FreeNode. I usually join a few and enable auto join then restart to make sure it works. SeaMonkey will be one of them.
-
IanN_Away
WaltS48: yeah, #SeaMonkey is bridged through from Matrix whereas #thunderbird currently isn't

(just in case you need some variety)

jcranmer, for matrix? firefox --ssb
-
KaiE
Initially, I had hoped I could use a standalone client for Matrix, I like having chat in its own application, separate from firefox and thunderbird, which might be restarted more frequently.
-
KaiE
However, when using matrix chat.mozilla.org with a mozilla ldap account, it's necessary to use moz duo single sign on, and I didn't find a client that supports it and that I liked. Quaternion doesn't support it.
-
KaiE
Also, there are certain Matrix features that aren't supported well in some dedicated clients, like the "emoji reaction" feature. Trouble is, in a non-supporting client, you might just see a hint like "unsupported event" occurred, which can be frustrating, IMHO, if you don't know what kind of event that was.

For that reason I decided that sticking with a browser is best. Rob pointed me to the recent new firefox feature that allows to run a web page in an app-like window, the "SSB" feature. That's what I use now, with a dedicated firefox profile.
-
KaiE
Created new profile "ssb", started "firefox -P ssb" once, followed web instructions to enable the ssb feature. Quit. Now I start Matrix using: firefox -no-remote -P ssb --ssb

KaiE

<jcranmer "yet another variation of xulrunn"> More an htmlrunner 😉 - but actually, it's more or less the resurgence of "desktop web app" in a new disguise (i.e. more the new cool PWA stuff, less the old difficult FxOS stuff, at least marketing-wise)
